Five Pillars

Islam     Session Twelve

Item #3, bullet #7 of outline:  Five Pillars

The five pillars of Islam are basic obligations of every Muslim.  They are obviously non-martial in nature, but are by no means the only obligations dictated by the Koran and the Hadith.  The five pillars are:

  1. Declaration of Faith: “There is no God but Allah and Muhammad is the messenger of Allah.” It is recited on many   occasions.  Converts to Islam recite this to become a Muslim.
  2. 2.Prayers:  Five daily prayer times while facing Mecca.
  3. 3.Pilgrimage:  Every Muslim must travel to Mecca at least once in their lifetime.
  4. 4.Fasting:  Muslims musts fast during Ramadan (the 9th month) from sunrise to sunset.
  5. 5.Almsgiving:  Required payments to the community or state.

Jihad (“. . . make war on unbelievers.”) (Sura 9:73) was once considered a pillar.  It is no longer but, it is no less an obligation as commanded by verses of the Koran and the Hadith. (#2, P. 21) More on this later under item seven of the outline.

Constant State of War:  House of Islam (dar al-Islam) vs. House of War (dar al-harb)

The actuality and significance of the constant state of war between Islam and the rest of the world cannot be overstated.  Serge Trifkovic describes it thusly:

“That Islam sees the world as an open ended conflict between the Land of Peace (Dar al-Islam) and the Land of War (Dar al-Harb) is the most important legacy of Muhammad.  . . . Muhammad’s practice and constant encouragement of bloodshed are unique in the history of religions.  Murder, pillage, rape, and more murder  in the Koran and in the Traditions ‘seem to have impressed his followers with a profound belief in the value of bloodshed as opening the gates of Paradise’ and prompted countless Muslim governors, caliphs, and viziers to refer to Muhammad’s example to justify their mass killings, looting, and destruction.”  (#18, P. 51)  “Kill, Kill the unbelievers wherever you find them” (Sura 2: 191) is an injunction both unambiguous and powerful. (#18, P. 51)

Selected verses from the Koran demand war against the non-Muslim world:

  • ”O Prophet, make war on the unbelievers and hypocrites and deal rigorously with them; . . . (Sura 9: 73)
  • ”O believers, fight the infidels who dwell around you, and deal rigorously with them.” (Sura 9: 124)
  • ”Do not yield to unbelievers, but strive against them in a strenuous Jihad.” (Sura 25:52)
  • ”Fight against the idolaters until idolatry is no more and Allah’s religion reigns supreme.” (Suras 2:189 & 8:40)

Gregory Davis comments: “But what distinguishes Islam from other religions is that when it is correctly understood and practiced, Islam actively seeks the subjugation or destruction of everything that is not itself.  . . . But Islam is the only religion whose basic animating principles pit it against the rest of the world, ensuring that war is the natural and obligatory state of affairs.” (#2, P. 4)

Iran’s Ayatollah Khomeini has stated boldly and bluntly:

“Islam makes it incumbent on all adult males, provided they are not disabled or incapacitated, to prepare   themselves for the conquest of (other) countries so that the writ of Islam is obeyed in every country in the world.     . . . Those who know nothing of Islam pretend that Islam counsels against war.  Those who say this are witless.  Islam says:  Kill all the unbelievers just as they would kill you all.” (#15, p. 35)

Bernard Lewis in his book , “The Middle East”, states:  Between the Muslim state and it infidel neighbors there was a perpetual and obligatory state of war which would only end with the inevitable triumph of the true faith over unbelief and the entry of the whole world into the house of Islam.”  (#9, P. 305)

The hadith states:  “Allah’s Messenger said:  I have been ordered by Allah to fight against the people until they testify that none has the right to be worshipped but Allah and Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah . . .” (Bukhari 1:2:25) (#3, P. 119)

It is clear from the Koran to the hadith to prominent Muslim authorities that Islam’s constant state of war against the unbelieving world is to be  waged until all the world is Muslim.  It is also clear that our leaders who constantly refer to Islam as the “religion of peace” are severely detached from reality and are, in effect, aiding and abetting Islam’s goal of ruling the world.

Next session we will begin the discussion of the spread of Islam and its first empire.
